# If my molar ratio (iodine to Zinc) is 1.368 How would I find my empirical formula?

You multiply by 3 and round to the nearest whole numbers to get 4 mol I to 3 mol Zn, so the empirical formula is:

Zn3I4

However:

You can get much closer to the given ratio by multiplying by 19:

Zn19I26

but that seems unreasonable. (Multiplying by 11 or 8 are also improvements over 3, but the same trouble with unreasonableness applies to those multiples too.)

On the other hand, Zn3I4 seems almost as unreasonable since it should be ZnCl2. (If the ratio given in this question is the result of some laboratory work you did, you missed nearly a third of the zinc somehow.)
