It depends on the gearing, some that are raced in Baja go over 120 mph.

Depends on the bike, the tires, and purpose of the bike.

Purpose is Dirt. So, knobbies on the dirt. Changing tires, surface, gearing negates the comparison. Anything can have a hi top speed if geared high enough.

I had an Enduro which is dual purpose. So had taillight and muffler for street use but suspension more for off road use.  I guess it was about 100mph on road.  Knobby tires were not too knobby because pavement would be a rough ride. So, it was "decent" in both environments.

A strictly dirt bike has knobbier tires, no muffler, no tail-light(the stuff cops want) for road bikes.

It would be geared for the track which is many bumps and turns so even 40mph is fast. If you ever watch off road racing, you would know that is a freaky speed.

depends on ACTUAL DIRT BIKE and definition of "dirt' bike. KLR650 dual sport, GS850 BMW have run Paris- Dakar with some 100 mph stretches. 125cc small motocross- or say a PW80 Yamaha will be geared for 40 mph top speed at times and the 400 to 500cc desert racers will be geared for 100 mph while 250 trials will be geared more for putting across bad ground at 50 mph

Dual sports are Not dirtbikes. Dirt bikes have no headlight. With knobby tires...doubt they will go fast on the street, and be timed accurately on dirt as slip and slide. No speedo, either.

They are light and geared for acceleration, so they are quick.

"quick' can mean acceleration..or, top speed--top speed actually quite low on a stock dirtbike. Acceleration good--In the Dirt. Not on the street with knobbies which is where a prorer timing would take place.

Have had my WR 450 clocked at 104 MPH during a Baja 250 race, not sure how accrue that was but that's what they said. Bike was geared to the moon but didn't do well in the slow sections, was a fun race though.
