A plane is always quicker until you get a destination within about 100 miles. Trains in the US are much slower than driving when dealing with long distances. In your case, a train is listed at over 19 hours, driving at 15 hours, and flying at 2.5 hours. Always add 1-2 hours to flying b/c of having to arrive early.

Honestly, Amtrak can be expensive.  So in addition to taking much longer, you might also find that it's more expensive.  There are variations in the cost of both airfare and train fare though, so it would really depend on factors such as when you're traveling and how far in advance you book.
