Is retarded offensive in every context?

    Yes and no. Idiot, moron, and imbecile used to be medical terms, too. "Retarded" is no longer used as a medical diagnosis, and will eventually be a common and acceptable insult (if there is such a thing). English is a living language, and the meaning of words and how they are used changes over time.

    But since this is a relatively new thing ...there are people alive who have been medically diagnosed as "retarded". To avoid causing hurt to them or their families, it's best to use another word.

    It is not a word I like if it is used to describe a person. It is offensive and derogatory.

    Retarded was a medical term to describe the severely handicapped but because of the abusive way it's being overused the medical professionals don't use it as much.

    I've always thought it was a bit cruel to people who are a truly mentally retarded. It takes it lightly.
