If looking for the most powerful portable indoor aerial on Argos, should one go by distance range, to get the most powerful signal?

Get a Yagi for 700MHz that has 7 or more elements.

for better reception, the tv antenna MUST see the tv tower ....you can receive a tv channel at 100km but cannot receive it at 1km if there is a hill between the tv and the tower ...
locate the nearest tower ...maybe your window is in the path of the tower... if yes you may use an indoor antenna in the back of the window ... if no, install a roof antenna

Claimed distance range is one of the WORST things to look at.
This is partly due to the fact that two antennas with the same distance figure
can be Very different in actual performance.
(By the way. antennas are not "powerful".
A better term is "effective".)
Indoor antennas are never as good as outdoor antennas.
Walls block a lot of the signal that would otherwise reach an antenna.
About the best you can do in actual practice
is buy something that can be returned and try it.
That way you can try something else when one doesn't do the job.
Or, you could consult a local home theater installer and ask for advice.
Expect to pay for anything beyond a few useful answers.
