Dominance hierarchies reduce fighting among members of a social group. After determining which members are dominant and which ones are lower ranked, the dominant individuals get to feed or mate first without having to fight others off first again and again. The reduction in fights allow members of a social group to better bond with each oter and also reduce injuries due to constant fighting.
