Can I use desert sand for baby toes fenestraria?

I’ve had my baby toes fenestraria for half a year now. My question is if I can use desert sand instead of cactus soil mix? I’ve seen that they originally grow in sandy deserts, so I really want to give it that looks. If not, would it still be okay to have the sand for a top layer?

It would be better to make up a mix that was half sand with the other half equal parts of loam and organic matter, such as ground peat moss. You can cover the top with sand, if you like.
