The medical surgical team will often "write" or "mark" on your skin with a writing implement like a pen or a paint brush, so that they can be sure exactly which part of your body they need to cut into or otherwise pay attention to during the surgery.

This helps to prevent mistakes like when somebody goes into surgery to have a gall bladder or right hand removed, and instead they cut out the person's kidney or left foot by mistake.
