True or False : When you are not really grounded in reality, real things won't scare you as much as they should?

I understand what you mean and I generally agree. The more we "detach" ourselves, the more we see the true worth, value, and wisdom of things, and thus not need to depend on the physical for value and contentment.
But as the Buddha said: We need to find the middle path, that is the path of enlightenment.

It could be true or false, depending on the situation.
Perception is all, and perceiving things accurately might make them either more or less scary than perceiving them as something they are not.

Nobody is. The way our minds work, it's impossible to know reality, and you can't be grounded in what you don't know.

Possibly correct, but not necessarily. How much should real things scare you? Perhaps, not at all. Or perhaps, if fear is the only thing that can motivate one to get out of harm's way, one should be scared. Personally, I think reason should motivate one's actions rather than fear.

One's grasp of reality has nothing to do with one's source of fears.

If you have a healthy, reverential fear of God... you won't fear anything else. You can't really live until you're not afraid to die.
You can't afford to be wrong about who God is.
Therefore get down on your knees and humbly ask.
Wisdom calls out in the street,
she lifts her voice in the square,
in the main concourse she cries aloud,
at the city gates she makes her speech:
“How long, O simple ones, will you love your simple ways?
How long will scoffers delight in their scorn
and fools hate knowledge?
If you had repented at my rebuke,
then surely I would have poured out my spirit on you;
I would have made my words known to you.
Because you refused my call,
and no one took my outstretched hand,
because you neglected all my counsel,
and wanted none of my correction,
in turn I will mock your calamity;
I will sneer when terror strikes you,
when your dread comes like a storm,
and your destruction like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish overwhelm you.
Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
they will earnestly seek me, but will not find me.
For they hated knowledge
and chose not to fear the LORD.
They accepted none of my counsel;
they despised all my reproof.
So they will eat the fruit of their own way,
and be filled with their own devices.
For the waywardness of the simple will slay them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them.
But whoever listens to me will dwell in safety,
secure from the fear of evil.”
