Was Göring fat in real life?

If not then why did they make him fat in Downfall?

In his later years "Herman the German" was indeed fat. As one of the highest ranking members of the Nazi party he got pretty much anything he wanted. "More pâté Herr Goering?"

His weight varied over his lifetime, but during the war he had become rich, and got addicted to drugs, and gained a lot of weight.

I don't he was fat at all when he was a flying ace in World War One. The plane probably wouldn't have taken off.

He was very obese, he lost a lot of weight after being captured in 1945.

That depends on what part of his life you are asking about. Up until the end of WW 1 he was quite thin. He gained weight during the 1930s and 1940s. And was fat at tje end of the war but after he was captured until his death he lost about 60 lbs.
