# I need help with algebra yes I have tried to figure it out ?

Penny made a 74% on her first test.What must she get on her next test to have an average of at least 80% (100 points per test)?

(0.74+x)/2 = 0.8

The average is equal to the sum of the values divided by the number of things you added... so 74% (or 0.74 as a decimal) plus x (what her next test percentage should be, as a decimal) equals her desired test average, or 80% (0.8).

When you solve this equation, you get 0.86, or 86%. Thus, she must get at least an 86 on her next test...hope this helped

Let x be percentage of next test and so if (74+x)/2 = 80 then x = 86%

You could also have done it using a bit of logic.

1. You know that each test is based on 100%.

2. You know Penny got a 74 on the 1st test.

3. You know that 74 is 6 less than 80.

That would mean she'd have to score 6 MORE than 80 on the next test, which is an 86. That would balance things out. She was 6 less than 80 on the 1st test; she needs to be 6 over 80 on the 2nd test.

Equation: (x + y) / 2 = 80; x = 74; Solve for y

{You are correct, but ...} geez ... 80 + 80 - 74 = 86 ... for this simple problem.
