Does anyone know why Tom cruise makes his own stunts?

I mean, I don't have anything against them, they're pretty cool, but why don't they just get a stunt double? Saves the hassle?

Cruise studied to be a Christian minister. He's a by-the-book good guy, through and through. No faking it. Does his stunts the way people want to believe.
