Realistically there are 197 countries. You start with the full members of the UN, which total 193. Add the two recognized with permanent observer status in the UN, which is the Holy See (Vatican) and Palestine. And then there are two countries that have their membership applications vetoed every time they apply, despite the fact that they have diplomatic relations with more than 100 other countries: Taiwan (vetoed by China) and Kosovo (vetoed by Russia).

There are other regions that claim independence, but the number of other countries that recognize them can be counted on one hand.

That really depends on what your definition of "country" is. The UN recognises 195 sovereign nations, but there are many nations that receive only partial recognition (such as Kosovo, Northern Cyprus, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, etc.), as well as several self-governing territories such as The Palestinian Territories, and constituent countries like Greenland that are actually politically linked to another country when it comes to their international affairs.

Look at Taiwan. Taiwan has a capital where its government meets. It maintains its own armed forces. It prints its own money. It issues its own passports. Taiwan maintains consulates in many nations around the world and in both its domestic and foreign affairs it operates completely independently of any other nation. How is that not a country? Well, because the Taiwanese haven't decided to take the leap and declare formal independence, despite the fact that they have been de facto independent since 1949.

The answer to "How many countries are there in the world?" will differ depending on who you ask and what criteria that person is using to calculate the figure.

There are 193 nations that are members of the United Nations.  There are a handful of others who are not members.  There are also some "breakaway" places that claim to be independent countries, but which are not widely recognized as countries.
