What does it mean when someone is described as being 'self-contained'?

I overheard my coworker describing someone a few offices from where we work.

It means that they do not require the assistance or approval of others to seek validation for their thoughts or actions. It's indicative of someone who is confident in their judgement and view of the world. It's a rare trait. Most of us need approval for what we think or do. Most leaders are self-contained.
