Because Cross is how British people mean grumpy or angry.

Cross and grumpy are about the same. Cross means that the person puts you in fear of his saying something insulting to make you angry. Grumpy implies that the person is uncommunicative but seems to be angry about something.

The British are not alone in this. There was a time in the US that cross was synonymous with upset, disturbed, irritated, etc.
