No, it is paid for it is just that you have no control over who is doing the paying.

Remember, taxes are when the government thinks it can spend your money better than you can!

No, it is not a question of free anything.  Everything has to be paid for somehow.  Socialism just says that the people who have nothing are not the ones who ought to be paying the biggest personal price. People with lots can share a bit more.  I would not call socialism bad, but it is not perfect.

Governments pretty well exist to either help all citizens ("socialism" like public works (parks, roads, clean water, sewage treatment and so on)), maintain decent living conditions for all citizens, ensure rights of all citizens are respected, and such things, or governments exist to impose rule and limits on most for the benefits of the few in charge.  Governments do not do anything else: they are either helping or they are controlling. A government that does not help and that allows the powerful to have excessive control is a bad thing, in my view.  Does not matter to me what "ism" they claim to follow if they are not helping the people and are only helping the powerful keep power.

Under capitalism some get rich, many remain poor.

Under communism nobody is rich, and nobody is poor.

Under socialism some get rich, and nobody is poor.

Nothing is free under socialism, we all share the costs, but all reap the benefits.  We all benefit in lower crime rates, lower inequality, better healthcare, a healthier workforce, a better educated workforce, and unlike capitalism, a stronger sustainable economy across the demographics.

No, "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is what socialism is about. If you're referring to the Democrats however, there is not one socialist among them. Even Bernie wants to keep the million he made from his book.

"from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is communism, not socialism. Also, very few books require enough work to be worth a million dollars
