# Is gravity a force?

• Good question. Well, in general relativity, gravity is not a force. But, I think that it's more of it's own category (kind of like a field, as someone has already mentioned).

• The word used by Newton means weight. so when ever there is a weight there is a force.However in weightless space there is no weight, and for weight to exist it has to be relative.

The answer can be considered  grave.Einstein did not consider gravity as  a Force.

• IMO, gravity is a FIELD that gives rise to the force we call WEIGHT (or the "gravitational force"). The units for gravity in the metric system are m/s² or N/kg.

That's my opinion. An argument for naming the force itself "gravity" is not without merit.

No, it used to be thought of as one, but according to General Relativity, it's just a pseudo-force. It is now thought to be just a curvature of the space itself around you. You can tell that it's not a force, if you think about what happens to astronauts in orbit around Earth. Up there, it is said that they experience zero-G, which means they feel no force of gravity. But in fact, up there, the force of gravity should only be 10% less than it is on Earth.

The reason the astronauts don't feel gravity is because they are falling at the same rate as the spaceship around them as it goes around the Earth. But meanwhile on Earth, we feel the force of gravity because it is acting against the force that keeps the ground stiff, and it exerts the same force on us. So when we're feeling gravity, we're actually feeling the resistance force against gravity that the ground exerts. So if there is any force that you can only feel in some circumstances, but not others, even though it's always working on you, then chances are, it's a pseudo-force.

• Oldprof, a force that you can only feel if it's being resisted against, is the classic definition of a pseudo-force. Another example, would be the centrifugal force, if you don't have something resisting against it, you don't feel it.

Note that the term "gravity" has several meanings.

1. Force of gravity, ie, Gravitational attraction between masses, usually measured in newtons.

2. Acceleration due to gravity, g, usually in m/s², with a value of about 9.8 m/s² on the surface of earth.

Gravitational attraction in newtons

F = G m₁m₂/r²

G = 6.674e-11 m³/kgs²

F is force, Gravitational attraction

m₁ and m₂ are the masses of the two objects in kg

r is the distance in meters between their centers

• Gravity is the byproduct of the newton (N) the international measurement of force. 1 newton is the amount of force required to Accelerate an object with a mass of 1 kg in 1metre per second per second.
