If William Carlos Williams started off Keats but tripped off Whitman then how can I be "original"?

You can be original by coming up with metaphors and turns of phrase that nobody has ever thought of before. WCW may have tripped off Whitman, but Whitman never wrote a poem about plums in the fridge, and WCW never wrote one about an astronomer, as far as I know.

Started? Tripped off? I don't know what that means. It sounds like Beatnik slang. No one's original. Go read Ecclesiastes. Nihil novum sub sol. It's not about being original but being good.
