When two black holes collide, why is the total mass of the black hole that is formed less than the sum of the colliding black holes?
Does the mass somehow escape the black hole?

Because energy is list be x-rays and neutrino bursts when the two black holes spiral around their common center of mass and the event Energy as electromagnetic radiation including x-rays and mass are interchangeable, but the it is a very inefficient process becajuse of entropy. Energy mass and momentum are all conserved. Whether this Universe is,a completely closed system or not is unknown. Black cl holes may be like cosmic garbage disposals rather than vacuum cleaners, What goes into the event horizon and into the singularity that is the black hole does not come out in THIS Universe. It may come out or produce a pacet universe that may ha e different laws of physics.

The two BH's are radiating their energy away in the form of gravitational waves, rather than electromagnetic waves. The first ever BH's detected by LIGO had masses of 29 and 34 solar masses. In the end, it produced a bigger BH of 60 solar masses, rather than 63 solar masses. The remaining 3 solar masses of energy got transmitted throughout the universe as gravitational waves. If that energy were transmitted as electromagnetic waves instead, then the brightness of that flash would have been brighter than the entire rest of the universe put together by several orders of magnitude. It would have dwarfed all other bright sources of light in the universe, like supernovas, and quasars. From a billion light-years away, that flash of light would've still been brighter than the Sun! So it's a good thing it's coming out as gravity waves rather than EM waves.

Where do you get that fool notion. If the singularities join, their mass would be the same as their sum.
What has been observed is they would more likely form a binary system with its own barrycenter:
Nothing escapes a black hole although Hawking radiation is shown as fact.
A black hole attracts far more matter in mass than the depletion.
