The area is perfectly safe to travel through. It has become a wildlife sanctuary since people have become afraid to live there.

What most people don't seem to understand is that substances that are not naturally radioactive don't remain radioactive for very long. They return to their natural state very quickly. Otherwise, the surface of the earth would be uninhabitable from the sun bombarding it with radioactivity on a daily basis.

    People are ignorant.

I believe on bus tours (yes, they give bus tours now), they give you a radiation badge.  If it's green, you're OK, if it turns yellow, you'd better leave as quickly as you can.  If it's red GET OUT OF THERE NOW.  If it's been red for a few minutes, you're dead.  If you stay on the tour bus, they know how long to stay "in the zone", so unless there's a breakdown, you'd be perfectly safe.

Depends on the level of exposure.
