People have a strong need to create order in a seemingly unfair universe. If there's no known explanation for a malady, they'll make something up. I think it's actually a coping mechanism.

The anti-vax movement actually dates back to 1763.  The mistaken belief that vaccinations lead to autism dates back to one research paper from 1996 that was found to be fraudulent.  Unfortunately the cause was taken up by media celebrities like Jenny McCarthy and the misinformation campaign has proven hard to kill.
