In America if a doctor screws up, is there a professional oversight organisation which has the power to prevent them working as a doctor?

I know in the UK that they can be struck off the register and prevented from working as a medical doctor anywhere, but is there an equivalent sanction in the US?

Licenses are state-regulated.  There are rules of the profession that apply so a person can have a license revoked for malpractice or other legal causes.  Depending upon the cause and the rules of other states, a specific individual might be able to get licensed in a different jurisdiction, or perhaps not.  Anyone, when applying for a professional license of any sort, will be asked about prior criminal acts or whether they have ever been the subject of disciplinary action by a board.  Whether the prior act is seen as sufficient to deny licensure or not is taken on a case by case basis. The general rule is that it is sufficient.

Doctors are licensed by each state. It is a state license and each state has a medical board that regulates the practice of medicine. Doctors are subject to standards that are upheld by the medical board. If the care is found to be substandard then the board may vote to review their work for a period of time to make sure actions are corrected or they may suspend their license for serious offenses.

The AMA is a voluntary medical association that some doctors do not join. It is an association that represents the interest of doctors. It does not have the power to regulate practices. The AMA does not grant licenses nor does it have to the power to  revoke a license from a doctor.

It's the same here. There are malpractice laws and doctor's will be reviewed by the American Medical Association. If they're found to be neglectful, their medical license can be revoked.
