# How many time is 40 more than 30?

would be really grateful if someone can explain which of the 2 methods is the right way to answer this question and also why:

Method 1:

40-30=10

10/30=0.33x

40 is more than 30 by 0.33 times

Method 2:

40/30=1.33

40 is more than 30 by 1.33 times

Both seem correct to me but I can't identify what's the difference.

Your first method is correct. I could suggest modifying that second formula. Try using this instead:

40/30 - 1

It is as much a grammar issue as it is mathematics. Forty is (about) 0.33 times more than 30. It is 1.33 times as much as 30.

I can never look at problems like this without recalling that guy who used to sell peanuts outside the ballpark for what he claimed was 700% less than the stadium price, which would make sense only if he paid people to take his peanuts.

How many times is 40 more than 30?

2 methods to answer this question:

Method 1:

40 - 30 = 10

10 / 30 = 0.33x

40 is more than 30 by 0.33 times

(40 - 30)/30 = 0.33

Method 2:

40 / 30 = 1.33

40 is more than 30 by 1.33 times

40 is 1.33 times 30

method 2 is correct. when you multiply a number by a decimal with no whole number, it lowers the number's value. it's the .33 is the same as 1/3 of the original number. when it's 1.33, you increase the original number by 1/3. the 1 is essential for the original number's value to remain and then the decimal increase it on top of that.

you can also verify this by multiplying 30 by 1.33, it will be about 39.99. if you do method 1, 30 x .33 = 9.9
