Help - Physics?

A fisherman is watching his float bob up and down in the waves. He notices that it returns to the top of the crest three times in 5s. He estimates the distance between successive crests to be 0.5m. What is the speed of the waves on the water?

    speed = wavelength * frequency

    Wavelength = 0.5 m

    frequency = 3/(5 sec)

    c = lambda*nu, that is,

    speed = wavelength * frequency

    = (0.5m)*[3/(5s)] = 0.3 m/s.

    You can also make sense of this answer by thinking that if a wavecrest travels at 30 cm/s, it will go 50 cm in 1.67 seconds (by which time, the next wavecrest will pass the fisherman's float), so in 5.00 seconds, this happens three times.
