I am being asked to re confirm my e-mail or my account will be closed on 9th Jan. I won't open that attachment. Is this a scam?

Yes it is. Phishing scam emails often contain a suspicious attachment that you must never open, but you're right to leave it alone. What you can do is delete the message immediately.
As a friendly reminder, Yahoo or any other email provider doesn't send you unsolicited emails to ask you for your personal information. They already have that stored in their well-secured servers.
