# What volume (in L) will 5.5 g of oxygen gas occupy if 2.2 g of the oxygen gas occupies 3.0 L? (Under constant pressure and temperature.)?

Simple ratio.

3L / 2.2 g = X / 5.5 g

from the ideal gas law

.. P1V1 / (n1T1) = P2V2 / (n2T2)

if P and T are constant

.. V1/n1 = V2/n2

rearranging

.. V2 = V1 * (n2 / n1)

since n = mass / mw

.. V2 = V1 * (mass2 / m2) / (mass1 / mw)

since mw = 32 g/mol and is a constant

.. V2 = V1 * mass2 / mass1

solving

.. V2 = 3.0L * (5.5g / 2.2g) = 7.5L

Volume of 5.5 g O2 = 5.5g / 2.2 g * 3.0 L = 7.5 L

The formal relationship is Avogadro's law stated as:

V1/n1 = V2/n2

But moles of a gas in a sample is directly proportional to mass of the sample, so substituting masses for moles works:

V1/mass1 = V2/mass2

3.0 / 2.2 = V2 / 5.5

V2 = 7.5 L
