Air resistance and suction. Leave a fuel cap off a wing tank and you'll learn very quickly about how much suction is created on top of a wing.

The "fuel stealing" suction is known as Bernoulli's principle

Negative air pressure on the top surface.

    Drag on the leading edge.

Higher than ambient air pressure on the bottom surface.

    Weight of aircraft.

These amounts and vector directions vary with speed, bank angle, altitude, angle of attack, dihedral, sweep angle, and wing shape.

Source(s): My friend taught me a lot about aircraft. He got the very first aeronautical engineering degree from Cal Tech.
