I am just wondering but can you actually start a fire with just a cigarette?

It depends on the fuel source. Very dry grass...definitely. Wet sticks....not likely. Spilled gasoline.......maybe it depends on exactly where the cigarette is applied.

With a cigarette that is lit, yes.

Used to be one of the most common causes of fire - a discarded cigarette in a trashcan.

It happened in Australia. Though that was not the initial cause of it, Lightning was.

Dry enough conditions and the right tinder and just enough breeze and viola "Whoosh".

But if you are TRYING...OF COURSE IT WON'T happen.  It is an accident. Or a puddle of gasoline.

Keep lighting it and let it sit there.

You'd have to have something to light the cigarette first. Then of course it could. Toss it into a puddle of gas for instance

It's possible. Unlikely under normal conditions, but possible.

The butt end, still alight, would need to land on something that doesn't take much to catch fire or at least smolder with enough oxygen around it (like a light wind) and a whole lot of time to build up enough heat to keep the flames going.
