What medieval league was theis I read about?

I recall reading about some medieval league not loyal to any particular city or country, in Europe, I think they had black and white tabards and some were slavic maybe? I don't remember the details well....

    Possibly the Knights of Templar. They became very powerful before being framed for heresy so that a king would not have to pay a debt (he also hoped to confiscate the vast wealth of the group, but the gold and jewels never were found).

    Are you thinking of mercenary companies? there were many of these that sold their services to anyone who would pay. The White Company was a famous one, but there were many. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Company
