Eisenhower had already had the US in there.

They all believed in the domino theory and the regime they'd installed in Sth Vietnam was massively corrupt and weak.

The US wanted to take a stand against communism and needed a victory after getting bloody noses in Korea and Cuba.

I really don't think it would have panned out any different no matter if Kennedy, Nixon or Johnson was in charge in 1961.

Freddie .. wrong again.  Kennedy did not start the "Vietnam adventure".  Eisenhower sent 'advisors to 'Nam in the late 50s.  Nixon, as VP, was not against involvement in Vietnam.  Nixon sent a chinese-american woman to interfere with the peace talks in  Paris to keep the war going to help him win the 1968 election.  That action by Nixon kept the war going for another 6 years and cost the lives of about 30,000 more American soldiers.   ---  Election of Nixon in 1960 would have probably escalated the war even faster than Kennedy/Johnson.
