What is this thing I found in my dead grandmother's antique button collection?

First time asking on here, sorry if my etiquette is off.

I was looking through my dead grandmother's button collection for nostalgia reasons when I found this little thing. It's a little smaller than a quarter, and the top oval (below the chain) screws off to show that it's hollow on the inside. No, it's not a locket, which was my first thought, it doesn't open up. Any idea what it is or what it would have been used for?

A "Vinaigrette" style container, probably. They were used in the early to mid 1800s for perfume or smelling salts type liquids.
