Why does before start with a B and after start with an A if A comes before B? ?

Because if we tried to make language symbolically consistent (numbers have the same number of letters as the number they represent, loud is a loud word, quiet is a quiet word, etc) it would devolve into an unusable mess. Language needs to be functional, not follow arbitrary logic.

That's the way letters and words are different.
Same way the letter aitch doesn't start with an aitch.

For the same reason IDIOT starts with an I.
