Why is everyone freaking out about the Astros cheating scandal? I thought it was common knowledge every MLB team sign steals?
For example the Red Sox got caught using Apple Watches as buzzers and they got fined but no one's freaking out about that

Stealing signs is legal. Using technology to do it and relay the signs is not. Simple.

It is but not every team has used technology to help steal signs.

It was the scope of the cheating that made it such a big issue. The "everybody does it" excuse is like asking "why do people make a big deal of school shootings? kids get into fights all the time.."
A retailer that sends employees into a competitor's store to "mystery shop" is doing research common in their industry. A retailer that plants recording devices in a competitor's stores and management offices is committing a crime... it's really that simple.
If a player is on second base and is able to pick up the catcher's signs, then relay them to the hitter with a subtle gesture, that's one thing. The Astros were using cameras, HD monitors, signals from the bench and possibly even electronic devices to directly communicate with batters instantaneously. Quite simply, that is cheating...
As for why it's such a "big deal".... that too is simple. For all the talk of the "purity of the game" Baseball is a billion dollar business. Much of that income is based on the fact that fans willingly pay to watch a drama that unfolds and is decided right before their eyes. If there is any doubt or feeling that the games are "fixed" or "scripted," the Game goes from being the National Pastime to a novelty event like WWE....fun for some, but certainly nothing that draws 20,000+ fans 162 dates a year.

Several reasons. Because the Astros won the world series people think they won because of this. Which is, of course, ridiculous. The positive effects of such sign stealing is minimal at best. Many hitters don't even want this information. As far as the Red Sox their turn in the barrel is coming. They are now being investigating for their 2018 sign stealing under Alex Cora. This story is not over.
