Pretty much. It's mutually intelligible with Hindi when spoken, but written in a different alphabet.

Hindi is the biggest official language of India, and the one most supported by the Indian government (India has maybe 1600 other languages), while Urdu is the main language in Pakistan.

Together (sometimes called Hindustani) they are like the 4th biggest language of the world, by number of speakers

Urdu's an Arabic-based language, and I think it's mostly spoken in Pakistan.
