When the UK was in the EU, why did British people need to have passports to travel to the rest of the EU?

    The UK was never part of the Schengen Zone.

      True, but citizens of  Schengen area countries could enter the UK by using their national ID cards. The UK does not issue national ID cads.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_identity_card_policies_by_country

    The UK does not issue "national identity cards" so having a passport was required to go to the continent.
