what do you call the attachments that are included in a message?

    A message included in another message is called an attachment.

    They are call "insertions" if within the document and "attachments" if external.

    They actually ARE called "attachments":

    If attached to a written letter, after the signature and the initials of the writer and typist, you put the word "Attach" to indicate that there are attachments to the letter.

    And that carries over into all forms of messaging.  They are called "attachments".
