7 and -2
verify
sum - > 7 + (-2) = 5
difference -> 7 - (-2) = 9

The two numbers are -2 and 7.

(5+9)/2 = 7 and (5-9)/2 = -2

The two numbers are 7 and -2.

x + y = 5

x - y = 9

-------------

2x = 14

x + y = 5

y = 5 - x

y = 5 - 7

Their difference is 9 so they are

x and x - 9

The sum of those two numbers is 5

2x - 9 = 5

x = 7 the other is -2

The sum of two numbers is 5:

x + y = 5

Their difference is 9:

x - y = 9

You have a system of two equations with two unknowns.  I'll solve this with elimination.

y's coefficients are already opposites so if I add the two equations together I get a third that has one unknown:

x + y = 5

x - y = 9

-----------

2x = 14

x = 7

Now I can solve for y:

x + y = 5

7 + y = 5

y = -2

7 and -2

They add to 5 and subtract to 9.
