What are some of the lower meat grades used for?

There's cutter and canner, etc but what does that actually become? Frozen burritos? Dollar store stew? And is it true there's one just barely "approved for human consumption" they feed to prisoners?

    not really.

On any butcher animal there are various cuts of meat, some tough and some not tough. there are parts that are mostly bone with little meat.there wouldnt be anything on that critter thats not fit for human consumption except maybe the entrails.

Keep in mind that our ancestors left very little to waste and ate everything they could off anything they butchered.

Low-grade meat is used to make pet food or food for zoo animals.

The lowest grade of meat classification in the US is the "Utility, Cutter, and Canner" grade which are safe for human consumption although they would never be called healthy either. You are not going to find them in the name brand grocery chains. These meats are typically used in pet foods although they have been known to show up in cheap rat-hole restaurants.

As for prisoners, the foods they are served are prepared by private contract firms and it depends on which company supply the food for which prison. Some of these companies have been known to cut corners and serve up meal that caused food poisoning.

some of the lower meat grades might be dependent where it was from, and serve great purposes.

one example is the meat close to the horn, which is tougher, making great stew meat, its labeled stew meat

Lesser quality meat grades get made into hamburger cube steak chopped stew meat and for use in canned food canned spaghetti TV dinners etc. The lowest quality utility meat gets sent to the penal institutions. It's edible it's not rotten. But from what I'm told by the prisoners they grind it up and make what they call a meat blob essentially a large meatball that they serve with rice and gravy.

Pet food, animal feed. But low grade usually is used in things like you said, burritos, stews, soups, tv dinners, canned spaghetti and meatballs. Essentially any product that visual appeal is not the selling point.
