Can you throw wetwipes into the fireplace? ?
Or because they contain plastic they would release poisonous gases?

Can I? Yes.
Would I? Definitely not in my own, and quite possibly also not in any other. Quite apart from the problem of the burning plastic possibly releasing hazardous fumes if it's not burned in a controlled matter, anything that doesn't get completely burned will add to the soot deposit in my chimney, and I'm currently getting by with very little soot thanks to burning only dry wood.
Sure, a single wipe might not be the world's end - but why start a bad habit?.

You could, but why would you throw something WET into a fireplace?

Plastic doesn't really release dangerous fumes when burned, let alone wet wipes which don't contain much plastic anyway. It's safe.
