As in all things, size matters. A 380 is a 32. 32 ACP to be exact. A 38 leaves a bigger hole. A 38 has more weight, travels faster & has more energy. Go with a S&W 686

.38 Super is an automatic cartridge that is much longer in profile than a .380 and even longer than a 9mm which is in-between a .380 and .38 Super.

Naming convention in bullets often makes little sense.  The 357 Sig is made from a necked down 40 cal (0.400") shell to accept a 9mm slug (0.355").  No where on that bullet does it measure 0.357".

The average .38 ACP has about 50% more energy than the .380 ACP. That's the biggest difference.
