15.What # is (2/5) of the distance, d, say, from 4 1/7 to 10? let # = n.

d = 10 - 4 1/7 = 9 7/7 - 4 1/7 = 5 6/7.

(2/5)d = (2/5)(5 + 6/7) = 2 + 12/35.

Then n = 4 1/7 + (2/5)d = 4 5/35 + 2 12/35 = 6 17/35.

Therefore (E) is the appropriate choice.

It is convenient to express all fractions in multiples of 1/35

4 and ¹⁄₇ = 29/7 = 145/35

10 is 350/35

Result will be [145 + (2/5)*205]/35 = (145 + 82)/35 = 227/35

The option that matches that is 6 and ¹⁷⁄₃₅

4 ¹⁄₇ = ²⁹⁄₇ and 10 = ⁷⁰⁄₇

The distance from 4 ¹⁄₇ to 10 is

..........10 - 4 ¹⁄₇ =

..........⁷⁰⁄₇ - ²⁹⁄₇ =

..........⁴¹⁄₇

and ²⁄₅ of the distance from 4 ¹⁄₇ to 10 is

..........²⁄₅ (⁴¹⁄₇) = ⁸²⁄₃₅

so, the number that is ²⁄₅ of the

distance from 4 ¹⁄₇ to 10 is

..........4 ¹⁄₇ + ⁸²⁄₃₅ =

..........²⁹⁄₇ + ⁸²⁄₃₅ =

..........¹⁴⁵⁄₃₅+ ⁸²⁄₃₅ =

..........²²⁷⁄₃₅ =

..........6 ¹⁷⁄₃₅...............ANS
