How does glucose inhibition of B-galactosidase benefit E.coli ?

    By inhibiting the synthesis of the enzyme when glucose is present, the E. coli does not expend the energy to transcribe the lac operon genes when glucose is readily available. 

    The inhibition occurs at the level of transcription of the structural genes of the lactose operon which includes the B-galactosidase gene.
