Why does Thomas the Tank Engine have coaches called Annie and Clarabel?

    Presumably that was what the Rev Awdry decided they would be called. In those days the boys did the important jobs like being engines and the girlies were dragged along by them. (Later film versions had female engines) I think he actually based them on the Talyllyn Railway which gave its coaches girls names.

    Many vehicles, including cars, ships, and trains, are given female names because the enclosed space is thought of as protective [like the womb?]. 

    The fictional Skarloey Railway, which formed part of The Railway Series of children's books by The Rev. W. Awdry, was based on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales.
