What happens to someone who owes on a car loan in the USA while living abroad and decided not to pay that said loan?

    The car will be repo'd and their credit will be ruined.

    If they still have assets in the US (particularly the car), those assets could be used to pay off the subsequent judgment.

    As soon as you went back to the USA you would be sued for the money.

    The car gets repo'ed, the bank sells it and sends a bill (and other fees) for the difference to be paid for by the owner. There might be some other legal issues to work out too.
