People put capital into businesses. People lent money to other people. They are "investments" on most definitions of the word.

The joint stock company (the precursor to modern commercial companies) were invented in the Netherlands in the 16th century (although there were earlier organisations with similar characteristics). People could put money into those companies and receive shares in the expectation of dividends and profit on the sale of the share.
