Because LPG gas is a liquid.

Because of the design of the tank and how the tank and valve system works. The valve is at the top of the tank. There is both gas and fluid in the cylinder. Gas is lighter and less dense than liquid so when it's upright the gas is at the top closest to the valve. If it were placed laying down gravity would cause it to settle differently and it won't work as effeciently. Whatever it's fueling needs the fuel in gas form, not liquid.

It's why sometimes when you put a propane tank on a forklift and are connecting the valve liquid sometimes comes out. That is the liquid escaping because it's been placed on it's side. If it were kept upright that is much less likely to happen. Some of the stuff they put in those fuel cylinders aren't any good and for us to get on us. Keeping the cylinder upright so there's no fluid near the valve we'll be messing with at some point is safest to keep the liquid form of it from getting on us.

You do that because you need it to release gas only, not compressed liquid, which is in the lower part of the tank
