    Not dots, asterisks to keep people from seeing and stealing your password.

  • They use dots because using random letters and numbers confused people terribly.

    It's an extra measure to make sure that only the person who knows the password will get in. It prevents the wrong people from making good guesses.

    Just in case someone has a computer infected with malware that does screen captures or allows remote desktop viewing.

    Even "worse" are the sites that have you click on an eye to reveal the password. { I admit, I just tell the computer to save mine. }

    • That is the best option, for most people! Those dots protect one's privacy against prying eyes, such as some identity thief in public. BTW, you can start ID stealing using "innocent" site, and use variations on the passwords for critical sites.

    A password, by its nature, is supposed to be secret. So its there to protect you from anyone disguised as a lamp in your room you may not know about. There is an option to show password as you type it on some sites.
