The term figurate number is used for sets of numbers, generalizing from triangular numbers to different shapes (polygonal numbers) and different dimensions (polyhedral numbers).

The mathematical study of figurate numbers is said to have originated with Pythagoras (~500 BC) possibly based on Babylonian or Egyptian precursors.

That's much earlier than numbers named for Fibonacci (born 1170), Kaprekar (born 1905) and Mersenne (born 1588).

    Answer:

    Figurate numbers
