I would guess about 1900. Jazz: Erroll Gardner, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. Blues: Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and B.B. King. B&B: James Brown, Ruth Brown, and Sam Cook.

Yes, the phonograph was invented in 1878, but it was just about 1920, as in the article, that actual music hit it's stride for being widely available to the public to play on it. Why this matters is that "about" 1920 isn't the beginning of ANY music, it's just the real beginning of recorded music.

It is already in full force by 1920. It probably started closer to the turn of the century, 1890 and 1900 are both defensible to me.
