MAYBE you can on the Chris Pine Capt. Kirk ones. Since it set in the Kelvin Timeline(aka alternate reality was a parallel universe). The William Shatner Capt. Kirk all the way to Star Trek: Picard is set in the Prime Timeline. Also Star Trek: Enterprise is set in the Prime Timeline.  Star Trek : The Animated Series is also set in the Prime Time line. It is set before the  Star Trek TOS Movie Series. As for Star Trek: Discovery is not known or sure of which timeline it is set in.

Yes, but the tv shows are better.

Comment: I agree The Wrath of Khan is a great film, but it's even better if you saw the ST episode it was based on.

interesting answer; the original 1960s ST with Bill Shatner,Leonard Nimoy,De Kelly,George Takei,et all are prefatory to the films & the entire franchis(the newest films arent ST other than some names: different premise different outlook, everything; Star Tek II:The Wrath of Khan is a great film

sure....you could,........but the Wrath of Kahn, has to deal with WHY Kahn was so angry......and you really need to see the original tv episode to fully appreciate it.

excellent answer; also: 'Kahnnnn!!', great acting, great film, gripping, a masterpiece: a rare example of a sort of sequel transcending the beginning, worthwhile seeing the excellent welldone episode(s) that set it up beforehand, brilliant, riveting, unforgettable:That shouldve been an acd award! :)

    Yeah.

IMO the movies are generally more fun than the shows were.

There were some really super-boring ones like the one where Spock dies...

Anyway, my two favs are "Undiscovered Country" (Shatner crew) and "First Contact" (Stewart crew).

"First Contact" is literally about a supposed "first contact" with extraterrestrials... where the technology to travel into space as if it were nothing is established.

nice answer; also, Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan is excellent, & Star Trek IV is fun, especially the original fulllength unshortened theatrical version, serious yet unexpectedly light & fun good film

Sure you'll still find them interesting and exciting but it sure helps to know the history of Star trek if you're going to watch the movies

also, STNG episodes with Jon Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, Brent Spiner, Patrick Stewart, et al are the basis of the second batch of films beginning with First Contact, that utilise the characters as being already developed,& knowing them & contexts & references within the films sets them up
